What is Physiotherapy?

Physiotherapists are experts on movement and function. At Agility Physiotherapy and Sports Injury our physiotherapists are skilled at assessing and managing a range of conditions including:

  • Physical conditions such as back pain, arthritis and repetitive strain injury

  • Sports injuries

  • Post surgery recovery

  • Mobility problems related to neurological disorders such as stroke, spinal cord injury or Parkinson’s disease

  • Pre- and post-natal problems and other women’s health conditions

  • Neck and back pain and other joint injuries

  • Running injuries such as heel pain and ankle sprains

Physiotherapists in Kanata and Stittsville can also help you to prevent most of the above conditions by offering advice on posture, exercise, workplace and lifestyle habits.

At Agility Physiotherapy and Sports Injury your physiotherapists work as part of a team with you and sometimes other health care providers.  The success of your physiotherapy program usually requires your co-operation outside of our Physiotherapy clinic.  You will probably be required to participate in an exercise program or some modifications to your postural or lifestyle habits.  Your dedication to your physiotherapy "homework" will greatly enhance the outcome of your physiotherapy program to help you achieve your goals as quickly as possible.

You can expect your physiotherapist will follow the system below to ensure your time is used effectively in our clinic and at home to reach your goals.

  • Assess your symptoms.

  • Plan your treatment.

  • Treat your condition.

  • Continually evaluate the effect of treatment on your condition and adjust the treatment plan if necessary.

  • Help you to manage your condition at home and to prevent reoccurrence of problems.

  • Communicate with any other health professionals involved with your condition, such as your doctor, to ensure a united approach to achieving your goals.

At Agility Physiotherapy and Sports Injury our physiotherapists keep up-to-date with the latest in medical and sports science research to help them select treatments that have been scientifically proven to help your condition.  This is called "Evidence Based Practice".

Some of the treatments that Physiotherapists at Agility Physiotherapy and Sports Injury may use include:

+ Certified Assessment & Treatment Methods Offered

MOVEMENT ANALYSIS

Each patient’s first visit starts with a Selective Functional Movement Assessment (SFMA) and/or Functional Movement Screen (FMS). This is a series of ten movement tests designed to assess fundamental patterns of movement such as bending and squatting in those with known musculoskeletal pain.

This practice helps the physiotherapist to identify pain and impairments that may seem unrelated to the patient’s main musculoskeletal complaint, but which actually contribute to the associated disability. This concept is known as regional interdependence.

SFMA and FMS is a new approach to the treatment of pain and dysfunction and it is fully integrated into Agility Physiotherapy.

MANUAL THERAPY

Manual therapy is used by our physiotherapists to treat musculoskeletal pain and disability. It includes mobilizing and manipulation of muscles and joints. It can be effective in the treatment of soft tissue injuries and joint pain, reducing pain and increasing flexibility and range of motion.

MCKENZIE DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT (MDT)

Agility Physiotherapy & Sports Injury favours the McKenzie Method of treatment, a comprehensive approach that uses an algorithm to classify spinal-related disorders based on a consistent cause and effect relationship between historical pain behaviour as well as the pain response to repeated test movements, positions and activities.

Each distinct syndrome is addressed according to its unique nature with mechanical procedures utilizing movement and positions. Agility Physiotherapy is a movement focused clinic.

McKenzie treatment emphasizes education and active patient involvement in the management of their treatment. The goal is to quickly decrease pain and restore function and independence.

ACUPUNCTURE

Contemporary Medical Acupuncture is a precise peripheral nerve stimulation technique, in which fine solid needles are inserted into anatomically defined neurofunctional sites and stimulated manually or with electricity for the therapeutic purpose of modulating abnormal activity of the nervous system and/or the endocrine, exocrine and immune systems, in pain syndromes, functional problems and any diseases in which these modulatory mechanisms are available.

DRY NEEDLING

Dry Needling, not to be confused with acupuncture, is when the physiotherapist uses solid filiform needles to ease muscle pain. The practice is also referred to as intramuscular stimulation. While it is based on similar theories to acupuncture, dry needling targets the trigger points, the direct source of the patient’s pain, rather than the traditional meridians accessed through acupuncture.

CUPPING

Dry cupping is a technique well known in asian medicine. We offer a variety of cupping methods using glass, silicone and plastic cups. Glass cupping is where a flame is used to heat the air within the cup to create a vacuum to draw the skin up into the cup. Silicone and plastic cupping does not require heat. Cupping is proposed to increase circulation to the treated area, alleviate pain and relieve muscle tension.
